Surgeons are also responding to difficult challenges by
performing cutting edge operative procedures for a wide
variety of surgical problems related to hernias, gallbladder,
pancreas, spleen, esophagus, stomach, intestine, colon,
rectum, breast, thyroid, parathyroid, carotid, aorta, and
peripheral arteries and veins.
For children and adolescents,
the pediatric surgery division uses sophisticated technology
to provide the highest level of care. Surgeries range from
emergency appendectomies in adolescents, to complex
intestinal operations in newborns. Most procedures are
performed laparoscopically.
In the Division of Urology, an integral part of the Department
of Surgery, services were significantly expanded. Three
urologists, as well as two physician assistants have joined
this division.
“Our physicians are widely acknowledged
in the field and each are bringing their expert skills and
extensive experience to the Bronx community,” stated
Dr. Joseph Silletti, Chief, Division of Urology. All types of
urinary and bladder problems, renal cancer, kidney stones,
and sexually transmitted disease are now treated. Prostate
and testicular cancer, as well as erectile dysfunction are
important parts of its men’s health program.
In women, the
emphasis is on treating urinary incontinence and urethral
diseases. When necessary, urologists perform surgery
on patients using state-of-the-art equipment. Minimally
invasive procedures, such as an enlarged prostate gland
that is benign, prostate hyperplasia (BPH), are commonly
performed with advanced Green Laser technology. |
