Surgery

Providing Expert Skills that Contribute to Successful Patient Outcomes

The Department of Surgery, under the leadership of Dr. Ajay Shah, Acting Chairman, Surgery, is continually moving forward and achieving successful outcomes for its patients. Their overriding goal is surgical excellence and patient satisfaction.

Bronx-Lebanon offers a full range of general and subspecialty surgical services, including gastrointestinal, breast, endocrine, thoracic, vascular, trauma, and critical care. Minimal invasive procedures are increasing to serve the needs of the community.

Advanced laparoscopic surgeries are also now utilized. Additionally, surgeons provide breast cancer surgery and plastic surgeons provide reconstructive, as well as cosmetic surgery. Vascular surgery specialists offer both a noninvasive testing laboratory and minimally invasive techniques, including endovascular procedures for patients with aortic and peripheral vascular disease.

Surgeons are also responding to difficult challenges by performing cutting edge operative procedures for a wide variety of surgical problems related to hernias, gallbladder, pancreas, spleen, esophagus, stomach, intestine, colon, rectum, breast, thyroid, parathyroid, carotid, aorta, and peripheral arteries and veins.

For children and adolescents, the pediatric surgery division uses sophisticated technology to provide the highest level of care. Surgeries range from emergency appendectomies in adolescents, to complex intestinal operations in newborns. Most procedures are performed laparoscopically.

In the Division of Urology, an integral part of the Department of Surgery, services were significantly expanded. Three urologists, as well as two physician assistants have joined this division.

“Our physicians are widely acknowledged in the field and each are bringing their expert skills and extensive experience to the Bronx community,” stated Dr. Joseph Silletti, Chief, Division of Urology. All types of urinary and bladder problems, renal cancer, kidney stones, and sexually transmitted disease are now treated. Prostate and testicular cancer, as well as erectile dysfunction are important parts of its men’s health program.

In women, the emphasis is on treating urinary incontinence and urethral diseases. When necessary, urologists perform surgery on patients using state-of-the-art equipment. Minimally invasive procedures, such as an enlarged prostate gland that is benign, prostate hyperplasia (BPH), are commonly performed with advanced Green Laser technology.

It offers the benefit of few or no side effects to patients. Stone disease is treated with the Holmium laser that breaks up kidney stones without requiring invasive surgery. In emergency situations, the Department of Surgery works closely with the ER staff to provide 24/7 coverage.

Patients requiring surgery are brought to the operating room for necessary intervention.

There, the OR nurses and staff provide surgeons with necessary support. The perioperative team works in state-of-the-art operating and recovery rooms.
