“We are dedicated to providing the best eye care to all
of our patients,” stated Dr. Martin Mayers, Chairman,
Ophthalmology. The youngest ophthalmology patients
come from the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. These babies,
born prematurely, often have incompletely developed
retinas.
Even at full term, a baby’s retina usually finish
growing a few weeks to a month after birth. In premature
babies, the retinal blood vessels are at risk of developing
abnormally. This abnormal growth called Retinopathy of
Prematurity (ROP).
The only way to determine if ROP is
present is by examining the inside of their tiny eyes.
Bronx-Lebanon’s specially trained ophthalmologists initially
examine these infants in the NICU, noting abnormalities
and the stage of ROP.
If left untreated, ROP can lead to
blindness. |
Bronx-Lebanon was one of the first hospitals in the nation
to offer laser treatment for ROP. |
Following their
discharge, the newborns are monitored through regularly
scheduled visits to ophthalmologists.
Among the broad array of advanced diagnostic and surgical
eye procedures performed at Bronx-Lebanon are:
Cataract Surgery, using state of the art microsurgical and
phacoemulsification instrumentation, Dr. Mayers and Dr. Joseph
Zelefsky train residents in the most advanced techniques.
Cornea and External Eye Disease patients, including those
requiring selective transplantation of specific corneal layers, are
cared for by Dr. Mayers and Dr. Alex Traykovski.
Glaucoma care, including medical, laser, and surgical treatment,
is provided by Dr. Alix Fleury, Dr. Eulogio Gonzalez, and
Dr. Zelefsky. |
